About Course

Programs don’t automatically protect or advance rights just because they intend to do good; that requires a deliberate approach.

This module introduces the Human Rights-Based Approach (HRBA): what human rights are, why women’s rights need to be named and addressed specifically within that framework, and how HRBA principles translate into the actual design, delivery, and evaluation of programs.

The goal isn’t to memorize a list of principles; it’s to be able to look at a program decision and ask, “Does this reflect equality, participation, and accountability, or not?”

What Will You Learn?

  • By the end of this module, learners will be able to:
  • Define the basic concept and principles of human rights, and explain how women's rights fit within that framework.
  • Recognize the inherent dignity and worth of every individual, and describe what an environment that fully respects people's rights looks like in practice.
  • Explain how HRBA places individuals and communities at the center of development efforts, recognizing their agency and enabling their participation in decisions that affect them.
  • Identify the five core HRBA principles and apply them to real program decisions.
  • Identify practical strategies for building HRBA into program design, implementation, and evaluation.
